Rotating a DIN Plug

If you’ve never worked with plug-and-socket electrical connections, you might have a lot of questions the first time you see one. What’s the torque spec. for tightening the plug? How important is the gasket? How do I reorient the direction of the plug?

Our latest video tackles the last question. Reorienting the socket is very easy, especially if you do it during wiring, because you’ve already done most of the work to access the terminals! Plug and socket electrical connections are becoming more and more common in industrial equipment in the USA, so we ought to get comfortable with them.

How to reorient a DIN plug

This video assumes the DIN plug isn’t already wired and connected to power. The plug is affixed using one screw. Loosen this screw and remove the plug.

The gasket is important, so remove this next and set it aside. Remove the screw from the plug housing. It should pull out with limited resistance. After removing the screw, you can pop the connection block out of the housing using a small, flat bladed screwdriver as leverage.

If you look at the back of the connection block once it’s free, you’ll notice the screw terminals used for wiring to the plug. This is the perfect time to wire the plug!

You have four options for orientation. The original orientation can be modified 90 degrees in either direction or, as shown in the video, 180 degrees.

Once you’re finished, you can pop the assembly back together, replace the screw, and fit it up. Don’t forget the gasket!

Why use plugs instead of enclosure terminals?

Plug and socket electrical connections make it easy to disconnect power for routine maintenance, installation of spare parts, or replacement. Using a plug set instead of enclosure terminals reduces the chances wires will be re-installed incorrectly after maintenance is complete. Using SO cord in conjunction with a plug and socket electrical connection makes for a light, flexible, liquid-tight connection with proper installation, and plug sets are also compatible with rigid and flexible conduit.

At Combustion 911, we stock a broad range of Elektrogas parts. We favor options with electrical connection via plug and socket where offered. We value the ease this feature brings to installation and maintenance, whether that work is being done by our customers or by our own team.
